Facebook made a new acquisition today. It is being said that location based service provider Gowalla has been purchased by Fb for an undisclosed sum. Got the news from CNN. Facebook has not yet released any official comment.
Gowalla, launched in 2009, it went head to head with its competition Foursquare and lost. Badly trailing Foursquare in user adoption, Gowalla recently shifted directions, recasting itself as a travel guide.
It is being said that some of Gowalla employees will shift to Fb headquarters in Palo Alto to work on Timeline.
After failing in competition with Foursquare, Gowalla has transformed itself into a story telling app. The story of your travel.
It makes perfect sense why employees of Gowalla are called to Palo Alto to work on Timeline. Timeline tells the story of your life and Gowalla, the story of your travel. When both work together i can see something new and cool.
Maybe Facebook didn't have to pay a high price for Gowalla as it was in a bad state.
Facebook aims to make about 20 purchases in 2011. Well 2011 is almost over. You might want to check out this article for info on these purchases: http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2011-08-23/facebook-steps-up-acquisitions-to-add-users-as-google-rivalry-grows-tech.html
